Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen bei Osnabrück

In 2009, the Brenninkmeijer family of entrepreneurs founded the company in their Westphalian home town of Mettingen Draiflessen. In addition to the modern conference centre, a museum, the Draiflessen Collection, planned to the highest international standards, was built on the former production site, with presentation areas for top-class temporary exhibitions as well as state-of-the-art archive and storage rooms.
The museum offers visitors three different areas:
The main exhibition area (Main Space) with changing presentations of artistic works and international loans, the Studiensaal with the Liberna Collection and changing exhibitions from the outstanding collection of book art and graphic art with a focus on the 15th and 17th centuries, as well as DAS Forum as a platform for family business research, which presents insights into the scientific work with the archive and collection.
Please note: As our collections cannot be permanently presented in a permanent exhibition, we exhibit selected objects Kunst and Unternehmen online and thus provide an insight into what is in our depots.

From the very beginning, the Draiflessen Collection was conceived as a meeting place. It is about exchanging and passing on experiences, as well as getting to know and recognising other perspectives. All exhibitions are accompanied by an extensive programme of educational activities, workshops and excursions for people of different ages and physical and mental abilities.

The ancestors of the founding Brenninkmeijer family belonged to the so-called Tüötten, Westphalian itinerant traders who travelled through Germany and northern Europe, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, to trade in linen. In choosing the location for Draiflessen, the entrepreneurial family consciously drew on their Westphalian roots and their home town of Mettingen. At the same time, this was linked to the decision to expand the range of cultural institutions in the region with an art museum away from the metropolises.

The name "Draiflessen" [dʁaːˈflɛsn] is a word construction derived from the old secret language of the Tüötten. Its two word stems "drai" (meaning: three, trinity, turn, trade) and "flessen" (meaning: flax, linen, home) express important themes for the founding family: their close connection with their Westphalian origins, their Christian faith and their entrepreneurship, which began in the textile trade.
